Grosvenor

Based on the engravings above the door of the Manchester School of Art by Walter Crane from the late 19th century. This typeface, based on the school's wordmark, was digitised in 2023 for The LEGACY Issue.

Benzie

As part of The FRESHERS Issue 24/25 the design team visited the Letterpress in the Manchester School of Art and printed alphabets of a range of typefaces, which we went on to use in the issue. This font, Benzie, is based on Helvetica Bold and was named after the building that's home to the design department, recently renamed after LS Lowry.

Chatham

Another typeface from the Letterpress - this was a big woodblock typeface. It's a condensed gothic sans serif, which we named Chatham, after the tower in which the bookbinding workshops are located.

Cavendish

A typeface based on the workshop's Clarendon case, a characterful early slab serif. As with most of these fonts, we printed them a few times and have incorporated alternates into the font to replicate printing from the same blocks multiple times.

Cavendish Street has now reopened as part of the expanded All Saints Park.

All Saints

Another of the bindery's typefaces, this time based on Windsor. This too features plenty of alternates, as well as numerals.

A final selection from the letterpress; this condensed serif wasn't all present, so some characters have been digitally recreated to complete the alphabet.
